Information such as this must inevitably be rather general because I have many people on my courses who are interested in many types of woodturning.

Some can already see what it is they want to make.  Many do not.  It is my job to help students in both categories unlock their imaginations and provide them with good practical help and guidance to develop their skills, and enable them to express their ideas in the magical and natural world of wood.

In my studio workshop (not a classroom)  I prefer to teach on a one to one basis, that way I can give full attention to each person's needs - which can vary greatly. Two people can be taught together if requested.

It also enables me to concentrate on helping each individual develop their creative thinking and design skills, if appropriate, because this area seems to be difficult for many and is often neglected.  I am keen to develop the full potential of a person, not only the necessary technical skills. I firmly believe that anyone can become a woodturner, but a point in the right direction by a professional is essential. Too many hours are lost by novices trying to find answers that a professional can demonstrate and teach in moments. Design is subjective but everyone can recognise a 'nice piece'.

I teach, on average, one week each month because I believe it is important for my students to know that I am a professional artist craftsman and not just a professional instructor.  I do make my living at it!

A major part of my income is from private commisions.  I have sent work to clients in the United States, Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland, Belgium and Poland.

My experience gained over the last 20 years enables me to work with students of all ages and abilities in a way which will put them at their ease and build their confidence whilst they increase their knowledge.

No course can be a substitute for what would once have been a very lengthy apprenticeship.  My course runs for 2 days because I do not think enough can be achieved in less; there is simply so much to absorb.  What I do promise is that you will see woodturning in a fresh light and, if you are a beginner, that you will have a good understanding of all that is necessary to continue safely and develop on your own.

I also take a continuing interest in my students.  If those who come to my courses need advice on techniques, tools or any other aspect of our art at any time in the future, I am always happy to provide it.

During the course students will consider and experience the different types of turning, safety, tools, tool care and different methods of sharpening, supporting or holding of wood safely, finishing techniques and problems we all have and how to overcome them.

It is my aim to unlook the door into the world of woodturning.  I want to inspire you to create your own styles - not purely to mimic others.

Each day the student will take home with them the article that they have made on that day.  On day one this will encapsulate the skill of spindle turning exploring the various shapes that can be made, and on day two a bowl will be made by the student from start to finish followed by any demonstations that might be needed for future projects.  These finished items are included in the course tuition fee together with teas, coffees and lunches.
